attribute resolver question

I've got what I hope is a simple use case that I'm someone can help me
address.
We the standard LDAP authentication module. Everything is working well.
There is a proposal however to change the way the process works.
The request would be to use a different attribute for attribute resolution
and NOT the uid (ie employeeNumber).
I see that the ldap.properties file can request specific attributes.

How could I allow authentication and use the returned employeeNumber for
attribute resolution?
Specifically I would like to use the employeeNumber and not
requestContext.principalName.
