shibboleth daemon died with heavy apache load

Thank you both for the suggestions.  

I know every situation is different but is that a suggestion on the stack
size to set.  I believe we are using the default right now for a 64bit
solaris server .  I already have a ulimit setting for file descriptors in my
shibd startup script so I could add  another for stack size.

I will be switching to worker but we run PHP applications and it seems a bit
more complicated since PHP is   documented as being thread friendly.

These are the current default settings I believe

#    # ulimit -a
time(seconds)        unlimited
file(blocks)         unlimited
data(kbytes)         unlimited
stack(kbytes)        8192
coredump(blocks)     unlimited
nofiles(descriptors) 256
vmemory(kbytes)      unlimited
