shib / saml protection for IoT

This might be slightly off topic.  I apologize and would welcome pointers
in the right direction.

One of our campus providers is a video conferencing system.  The service
owner has presented a use case for video devices that have to log in to the
service (self register) as clients, instead of being added like our
conference room telepresence systems.

I'm sure I'm not thinking about this broadly enough.

My initial thoughts involve using IP based authentication or maybe ECP.

Are any of you using shib to authenticate devices?
