Mahara with Shib?

There's a Shibboleth plugin available for Mahara[1] but from
discussions in their forum[2] it seems that this hasn't been
maintained in a while and instead the SAML plugin[3] (using
SimpleSAMLphp) is recommended.

If anyone knows of use of a current version Mahara with the (or an
updated) Shibboleth plugin I'd like to hear about it, thanks!
