I doubt there is much of a community, but there's no right or wrong, you have to decide how much time and energy to devote to dealing with them.

My patience/tolerance with vendors is proportional to the amount of apparent interest they have in their job and their responsibilities and how cooperative they are. If they expect me to do their entire job and are really a pain, I basically quote them my consulting rate.

If they really don't know what the problem is but they point me at a piece of code or documentation that I can follow, then I'll spend a bit of time debugging if I can, but if they just start throwing up their hands and claiming, as you say, that it's not working, and then I tell them that I guess they'll have to figure something out or go explain that to the university department, who I've already primed with the understanding that the vendor is the problem for using a lousy implementation.

I believe the ruby-saml code is known to basically work for single IdP cases to at least some degree but I don't think I've run into it.
