I take it's in Java. That obviously means Apache in front of it if the SP were used, but regardless, the answer to any such question is basically contingent on whether the application can consume REMOTE_USER or an equivalent variable or header to log somebody in. Or whether it has a plug point by which somebody (i.e. you) would have to implement that.
