Or a different SP implementation.

(the IdP in this case would still send an attribute statement, so Scott's statement is still true, but the SP could do anything with it)

I also should add that just changing our DNS wasn't an option.  Our IP address at the load balancer was whitelisted in a variety of places, so rather than try to change firewalls all over, we swapped IP's.
