Shibboleth SP comparison with Azure AD Application Proxy

Hi, 

Apologies in advance for the confused use of terminology I'm going to
have.

I'm trying to determine if Azure AD Application Proxy

or an using something like 

https://wiki.shibboleth.net/confluence/display/SHIB2/SPReverseProxy

are similar solutions to the problem of 

1. Authenticating users securely
2. Providing access to resources 

We already run a Shibboleth IDP 

Can anyone help me understand the similarities and differences to the
solutions better ?
