Google and certificates

How did those of you who integrate with Google Apps and IdP v3 setup the certificates? I have tried their own instructions and uploaded the file it produces, to no avail (RSA and DSA versions, neither worked).

Their support asked me about extracting the public key from the IdP's own certificate, but the openssl command I found on several sites didn't produce a valid certificate file apparently.
They also asked about extracting the public key from the IdP's own certificate, but that didn't want to work either.
