It shouldn't be changed to "understand SAML" but to accept the
authenticated identity from external processes, e.g. REMOTE_USER as
environment variable from Apache httpd as provided by the Shibboleth
SP.
(HTTP proxying with httpd is even recommended in the filelocker
install instructions, though personally I'd rather use wsgi or fcgid,
which should all be possible as well with CherryPy as used by
Filelocker.)

But it doesn't seem anyone has done the (hopefully simple) work, yet:
