The answer from the project side is by dramatically increasing the funding provided or identifying developer(s) willing to join the project long term to deliver and support the functionality. The Board will be making that clear in the near future to the membership of the consortium, and the developers are obligated to provide estimates to guide that discussion.

In the short run, identifying specific, precisely defined, fully interoperable specifications that need to be supported goes a long way to helping scope work or guide the existing developers in the right directions to educate themselves.

And there's the existing extension done by Unicon, which I'm unaware of any experimentation with apart from UC (who funded it).
