Well, you could also just get past the upgrade, use Java 8, choose one of the engines, and move on too. I would agree that in terms of "support" of a wider audience, at a federation level, this is probably the right call to de-emphasize them. As a deployer though, I think scripting is much simpler to maintain than a bunch of complex adaptations of Mapped or Template to avoid scripts. 

In terms of V3, there are lots of other places you will end up wanting to use scripts anyway, so you can't easily avoid them.
