You don't upgrade shibd, you upgarde everything (including mod_shib).
Maybe that's what you meant?

If you're using a supported operating system that provides a package
management system you'd use that, e.g. on CentOS/RHEL "yum update".
That also takes care of preserving your configuiration files.

Also upgrading from one obsolete version (my guess: Debian 7
"Wheezy") to another obsolete version (my guess: Debian 8 "Jessie") of
the Shibboleth software isn't recommendedn.
So if you're using Debian the backports are what you should use. I'm
not sure the shib backports are done and fully usable yet, but at
least I see a 2.6.0 package in jessie-backports already.
