IDP3 SQL Authentication How to?

Does anyone have a general how to guide to configuring IDP 3 to authenticate using a SQL DB instead of an LDAP server?

I found a bunch of older stuff online. Mostly based on this but the files don't seem to be available anymore and I'm not even sure they will work w/ idp 3

My assumption is I'll need to use JAASAuthnConfiguration for the Username/Password handler, but the wiki documentation assumes a lot of advanced knowledge of JAAS which I do not have. Was hoping perhaps someone out there has done this before and had a "dumbed down" version somewhere I might be able to use as reference for setting this up. Even if it's for an older IDP version, anything would help a lot.
