supported hashing in IDP 3

It is not documented anywhere but the login process breaks in shibboleth whenever I change a users password to be encrypted with anything above SHA. It works with plaintext (of course) and it works with SHA, but nothing higher.

I'm fairly certain that is entirely incorrect. Certainly would be surprising to me, but admittedly I don't know for certain. Is there something anywhere that says anything like that?
