All the other syntactic banter I stirred up with my question aside, I 
loosely translated this answer to mean 'use variant 1 at your own risk.' 
So, being 'risk averse' about this sort of thing, I opted for trying 
"Variant 2".  "Variant 2" works so well that, had I only started with that 
in the first place, I wouldn't have had any question to post to the list 
about at all.
