You are right. I am not using InComman's metadata.

To answer your question on how much memory you need to allocate to stop getting alerts, tautologically, you need to allocate enough memory so you stop getting alerts. It's really up to your particular environment. That said, this could also be a situation where your monitoring system needs to be tuned -- alerts are only helpful if they actually mean something.

Note also that if you're on Java 8, the MaxPermSize setting is entirely ignored, so you can remove it. [1]

OK, I was looking for Shibboleth IDP memory requirements which explains why I didn't find those two pages. So if I set it to 3 Gigs, how much RAM should I allocate so I don't keep getting these silly alerts? (I'm still learning how to tweak tomcat so forgive the silly question.)

Current recommendation seems to be at least 1.5 GB. I'm running with 2GB in production (ingesting the InCommon Metadata Aggregate) and this has been fine so far. That being said, as long as metadata bundles continue to increase in size, more is better. I think I recall Scott saying most people (if they are able) should just fling 3 GB at it and call it a day.

All;

   I'm unable to find any "real" memory recommendations for running IDPV2. I'm running Tomcat and have setenv.sh set like this:
   export JAVA_OPTS="-Xmx2048m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m"
and 2 gigs of ram. (I had to bump it up from 1024m because Tomcat kept barfing on the InCommon metadata I recently added).

Obviously I'm running out of space (Xymon keeps alerting me, if you're curious).

Does anybody have any idea what I should be using in terms of tomcat settings and real memory allocated to the VM? I'll take suggestions for IDPV3 as we are migrating there soon. In the meantime I need to do something with my IDPV2 install.

Thanks!
