FWIW, I'd say jury's still out on this, I saw a non-production OOM condition on V3 with 1.5G allocated so I'm up to 2. That's with InCommon plus several local metadata files of not-tiny size.

The real answer is Walter's: use a 64-bit OS, hand it 3G or more, and stop wasting valuable person time trying to save money on RAM. If you work for a clueless organization that doesn't understand the economics of that, you have my sympathies (and my similarities).
