Configuration Management Scripts

All,

I'm migrating a large deployment from manual builds to anything else under the sun.  I have experience with Salt and Chef, but Puppet is preferred here.

I have no particular affinity to any configuration or build management service, but I do want to start from reasonably maintained scripts if at all possible.

Anyone have a system in place that they particularly <3?
