Thank you for the suggestions - the classpath hint was very useful, as it helped me to understand, that 'java -version' is not good proof for the java version used by tomcat8. The problem was that tomcat shipped and used openjdk by default, although I installed oracle java and made it available to the system with 'update-alternatives'. Lesson learned.
