I've never heard of an SP being forced into this, but suffice to say the people on the other end don't understand how this is supposed to work.

There's nothing to document, IdP initiated SSO is proprietary by definition. The Shibboleth documentation on it pertains to the Shibboleth IdP, it has no relevance to any other software.
