Maybe you can answer my question, then. Assuming that happens, is it
really Apple mail sending you the password? I don't see how that's
possible unless Apple mail supports WS-Trust, which would be news to me.

I was assuming the thing talking to your ADFS server in that case would
have to be yet another mail proxy, just speaking WST out the back
instead of SAML/ECP.
