Issues running pairwise regex replacement when mapping header

Good morning,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction regarding an issue
I'm having with remoteuser.replace. I've only been able to get pairwise
replacement to work on letters and only by putting a parenthesis around
them. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to replace periods and
spaces. I have tried (my examples are pipe delimited):
.,,|(.),,|\.,,|(\.),,|(\\.),,|\\.,,|"\.",,|[.],, and none of them seem to
be stripping periods from the header. I've tried a lot of things for space
too, including \s and \\s and nothing seems to work. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Jeffrey
