Target URL is lost using Discovery Service

Hello,

I am protecting several resources on a web server using the SP running 
mod_shib in apache2. Login links using specific IDPs work as expected 
and the user is being redirected to the location specified as URL 
parameter "target", e.g.:
https://myhost.edu/Shibboleth.sso/Login?entityID=https%3A%2F%2Fmyidp.edu%2Fidp%2Fshibboleth&target=https%3A%2F%2Fmyhost.edu%2Fdesiredlocation%2F

When using a discovery service like DFN-AAI and selecting the IDP and 
logging in I am redirected to https://myhost.edu/ (or the URL specified 
in ApplicationDefaults homeUrl attribute) but never to the specified 
location in my link:

https://wayf.aai.dfn.de/DFN-AAI-Test/wayf/WAYF?entityID=https%3A%2F%2Fmyhost.edu%2Fshibboleth&return=https%3A%2F%2Fmyhost.edu%2FShibboleth.sso%2FLogin&target=https%3A%2F%2Fmyhost.edu%2Fdesiredlocation%2F

I tried changing the relayState attribute of the Sessions element from 
"ss:mem" to "cookie" but neither works.

I would be glad for any device how to solve or further debug the issue.
