And we'd do the same if and when we started including it in the regular installer, I think. Probably we would produce a production version of the distribution with no container and then a kiddie version that had one.

You cannot run a robust production system without access to the container, and we can't support that access with an embedded one. Catch-22.

Atlassian's ridiculous approach is the case in point. They stopped supporting non-embedded Tomcat and yet almost any deploy of Jira or Confluence requires modifications to it that you lose across upgrades.
