Yep, it's going to be a script. I should have mentioned that I expected that.
And yes, my management team understands there will be issues. I'm just the poor guy tasked with implementing it. (Why we don't populate that in the LDAP directory I have no idea....)

Somebody might have done it, but there's certainly no such feature. It would be a script. This is really more of a directory/IDM job. When you consider international students and cultural issues with names, doing it with any kind of simple algorithm is probably doomed.
