Shibboleth Service Provider Database Connection?

Is it possible for the service provider to connect to a database? Something like:

Service provider receives attribute -> service provider queries db using a received attribute to lookup some additional information -> service provider provides additional attributes returned from query to resource application.

Not that I think this would necessarily be the best way of doing things nor even an acceptable way, just curious if something like this is possible.
