Manually Invoke Shibboleth SP

Is it possible to manually invoke the Shibboleth SP?

Ie instead of the following flow:

User attempts to access secured resource -> shibboleth sp is invoked by apache -> sp redirects to appropriate idp

We could do:

User clicks button -> sp redirects to idp

Furthermore, is it possible to tell the SP via a URL parameter or otherwise which IDP to send the AuthNRequest to?
