Adding attribute values in resolver

I have a use case for combining synthetic values created from a scripted
attribute definition with "real" values from a system of record into a
single attribute. What I've tried that doesn't work:

1. Adding values to an existing attribute inside a scripted attribute
definition. (Presumably doesn't work because I'm adding values to a copy,
not the original.)
2. Merging values from two attribute definitions into a third using
dependencies.

I've had success with the latter when the dependencies are data connectors,
but it doesn't appear to work when the dependencies are other attribute
definitions.

I would appreciate any suggestion or hint to get this working.
