I certainly wouldn't try and argue you out of just opening it up, it's nothing to me, but for on-campus SPs, it's mostly Shibboleth and I just script it once they provide their certificate and vhost(s) in our help desk request form. Mostly painless even if it's still manual.

I also have feeds coming from the larger departments that want to manage it themselves, which is nice.

I get a lot of asks from mgmt for information about our services, so having a registration step with some idea of what the app is and the contacts is useful to me.
