SP Metadata Not Loading

Hi All:

I have an SP running for a while - version always kept current.

This morning I deleted the metadata backing file in path below - however
when I restarted the shibd daemon, the IdP's metadata does not appear in
the backing file location or in 'var/cache/shibboleth'.

I can 'curl' the Idp's metadata from the SP server (firewall access
available and the IdP's metadata URL is correct).

The shibd logs did not show any errors - only that the metadata was loaded.

When authenticating, the SP generates following message: 'Message was
signed, but signature could not be verified.'

Any thoughts to rescue my afternoon? Thanks.
