Monitoring Native Shibboleth Authentication

Hello All:
I would like to be able to monitor our native shibboleth installation further than just checking the /Status page.  My understanding is I could utilize ECP, but not sure this is on the right track as an SP.
Case:
Test for successful authentication to our app for any given IdP which we have test credentials for.  Goto https://sp2.wepanow.com/Shibboleth.sso/Login?target=https%3A%2F%2Fsp2.wepanow.com%2Fsecure%2FgetVars.php&entityID=<some IdP entityID>, post username and password, check redirected page for certain text.
The flow doesn't have to be exactly as above, but that is the goal, to ensure that not only the shibd daemon is running, but that authentication is working as it should.
I know this can be done with selenium, as that is how we are doing our legacy shibboleth checks, but was hoping for something a little more under DevOps control (without having to go directly to developers anytime we need a change to the selenium code).
Can someone give me some pointers using perl, python, php, or bash?  If I could establish a session from a script, I imagine I could check the /Session page for certain text.  This is more what I had in mind, establishing session via cli (script) and checking /Session page for attributes.
