I would actually start by ldd'ing the version of libcurl in /opt/shibboleth/lib and comparing that with an ldd of libxml-security-c.so (which is linked to openssl but not to curl).

If I ended up with a conflict because of a difference in versions at different times, that should show it.

I'll see if I can load the RH packages onto CentOS as a test.
