I tried this locally, uncommenting the parts of the configuration you commented out and it worked fine for me after I changed the two paths.

If I had the wrong paths, I got a more comprehensible "file not found" error.

I didn't use the --logConfig option, as I don't have a copy of the file you were using for that.

The error seems to be something thrown from the innards of Spring, rather than from the Shibboleth MDA code. It's not at all obvious why that would behave differently on your system than it does on mine.

It might be something environmental. Can you give us some idea of the host OS, version of Java and "printenv" output?
