Writing Custom Authentication Code

Hi,

Our user authentication source resides in databases.  Is writing custom authentication plugin the best approach here in-place of LDAPAuthentication or JAASAuthentication module?  Is there some documentation on how to do this?

Or should we look into ExternalAuthentication to try to extend on that?
