SP - Sticky Sessions in Load Balancing

We're a Service Provider. I believe we're on Shibboleth version 2.0. Our session management is centralized (database). Currently, we're exploring the option of using URL Hashing on our load-balancer - implementing URL Hashing requires that there are no sticky sessions on the load balancer. We're not certain why sticky sessions are currently enabled. Does Shibboleth implementation require sticky sessions (on our end) for successful communication between the Service Provider and the Identity Provider?
