Additionally, there's the issue of compatibility semantically, meaning that the current syntax has to mean exactly the same thing, more or less forever. So adding merging really means changing a class somewhere in a deliberate way no matter what. So I think creating something like that has to be a different implementation of either the resolver or one of the subordinate interfaces anyway, which would create a dividing line between basic use and advanced use.
