They're separate processes and a fault in mod_shib (or in Apache separate 
from mod_shib) has nothing whatsoever to do with shibd. Is there any 
evidence shibd is also crashing? Nothing you posted suggested that.

You are not "authenticating using shibd". You're using the SP, and the 
interface to Apache is mod_shib.
