FTP server enabled as SP

  This maybe a novice question, hope I am forgiven. How can an FTP server
be extended to function as an SP? I have researched it both in Shibboleth
mailing list as well as Web, but have not find an answer. The overview of
SAML says it supports FTP protocol, but not sure what that means. We have
Shibboleth working with HTTP where we have a single IDP and a few SPs,
however, how would it look when a FTP server comes into picture? Pointer to
documentation on this topic is greatly appropriated. Also if there is no
documentation, what would be the best way to address this use case?
