LDAP is always unique in my painful experiences with it.

I'd start by adjusting the connection handling and timeouts used and see
if that actually affects the delay, which would confirm whether or not
that's involved.

Try com.sun.jndi.ldap.read.timeout="1000" or something like that and see
what happens.
