Microsoft Lync authentication issue

After we federated Shibboleth to O365 (bypassing ADFS), our Lync clients keep
prompting for credentials. Outlook clients and OWA are working perfectly
with Shibboleth authentication. Do we have to have ADFS?  We have
exchange-online and lync on premise.  
I am very confused.
