No worries, I misunderstood what you meant, perhaps being a bit over
optimistic :). The consultants would be spinning one way or another, I
don't think they've ever done a SAML integration with service now. At
this point they're stuck on just getting the service now login page to
redirect to our Idp, it's still asking for a local servicenow
username/password. So their state of spin is more a reflection on them
than any result of my misunderstanding of the new functionality ;).

That's disappointing though, I was so happy when I initially thought I
could avoid having to do kludgy config on the idp side <sigh>.

I guess I'll go back to the original suggestions and examples that were
kindly provided when I first asked and just grit my teeth and duct tape
service now support into my idp...
