I have configured IdP using Tomcat 7 with the unicon version of the Jar file needed for back end communications like Attribute Query and Artifact Resolution.

Craig,
Have you considered using the IdP Quick Install for Windows process?
https://wiki.shibboleth.net/confluence/display/SHIB2/IdPQuickInstall
The quick answer to your questions is that it generally won't matter unless you're trying to use the IdP in particular advanced ways.
Thanks,
Nate.

I'm setting up an idP on a Windows Server 2012 (not R2) and I want to use Java and Tomcat since it *seems* most of the documentation addresses these installs.
Having said that, I'm confused about which Java and Tomcat I should use?
I *think* I want this Java: Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 SDK Update 4 (with JDK 7u10) - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javaee/downloads/java-ee-sdk-6u3-jdk-7u1-downloads-523391.html
and I see that Tomcat is up to version 7.0.50 however I see documentation that clearly says NOT Version 7. Have the problems with Tomcat 7 been fixed, or should I stay with Tomcat 6?
Can someone recommend a version of Java and Tomcat?
Also, the Java needs to be installed before the Tomcat, right?
Thank you!
