idP setup using Java and Tomcat

I'm setting up an idP on a Windows Server 2012 (not R2) and I want to use
Java and Tomcat since it *seems* most of the documentation addresses these
installs.

Having said that, I'm confused about which Java and Tomcat I should use?

I *think* I want this Java: Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 SDK Update
4 (with JDK 7u10) -

and I see that Tomcat is up to version 7.0.50 however I see documentation
that clearly says NOT Version 7. Have the problems with Tomcat 7 been
fixed, or should I stay with Tomcat 6?

Can someone recommend a version of Java and Tomcat?

Also, the Java needs to be installed before the Tomcat, right?
