IdP Operating System selection best current practice

Hi,

I am currently starting a project to improve our Shibboleth IdP implementation and have a few questions for the list. I did not see the answers to these questions when reviewing the web sites or mailing list so I apologize in advance if these could be answered elsewhere.

Our existing Shibboleth IdP runs on Centos 5 and interfaces with our legacy web authentication system using IdPAuthRemoteUser - this has worked for multiple years with great success. The project will remove the legacy web authentication system and validate the password using IdPAuthUserPass. We are considering whether to use Windows or Centos for the IdP given that we eventually hope to validate passwords against our Active Directory server.

Our current questions are:

1) What is the best OS for the IdP when authenticating with Active Directory?

2) What criteria should we use for selecting between supported Operating Systems?

3) Are there any issues we should be aware of when authenticating with Active Directory from RHEL/Centos?

We also welcome any additional advice in selecting the operating system for this new system.

Thank you in advance for your input.
