Questions starting to implement Shibboleth IDP

We've just started looking at using the Shibboleth IDP to handle our IDP
needs.  I'm looking at the page on Configuring User Authentication.  We
have an application running on tomcat that currently uses Tomcat
authentication.  It would not be too difficult to create a page that
doesn't.  I'm looking at using External Authn for that.  The documentation
says that it can trigger a custom developed JSP.  The questions that I have
are:

1. Can my authentication process display a login page for the user in their
browser?
2. After I have authenticated the user,  where can I find the LoginHandler
interface and what does it mean to invoke
edu.internet2.middleware.shibboleth.idp.authn.AuthenticationEngine#returnToAuthenticationEngine(HttpServletRequest,HttpServletResponse
