Pretty much. There's no legal entity to transfer it to, and trademarks are 
not global anyway, they cost a lot to register in every country. I believe 
Internet2 was instructed to register it in some additional ones, but I 
have no idea if it did.

I think the more important aspect of the question here is the fact that 
using the logo user-facing isn't encouraged, and the suggestions made are 
appropriate.
