Shibboleth IdP v3 beta 1 Salesforce.com Integration

I'm attempting a Shibboleth IdP v3 beta 1 Salesforce.com SP integration 
and am almost there. The Salesforce SAML Assertion Validator passes all 
tests but returns this message:

Subject:

Unable to map the subject to a Salesforce.com user

How do I include the canonical username the SAML response Subject?
