I don't see anything in that reference that mentions givenName being
supported, so I think you're sort of assuming facts not in evidence based
on what you'd expect/hope, but they may not live up to that.
That's what I meant by starting with the SP. Unless you know what they
support, specifically, it's like guessing on your side, not a good use of
your time.
So, what they're documenting is indeed what you're sending, and it's not a
good approach, but it's the same one Google Apps uses, and isn't uncommon
among the less functional SPs around.
