question regarding serial number in SP metadata

I wanted to update this ticket because this issue came up again with a new
vhost and I wanted to post how it was resolved. 

I set up a new vhost (SP) that communicates with an ADFS 2.0 IDP. I was
getting a failure message that indicated "x509SerialNumber must have
TextContent".  Since we don't have adfs experience we contracted with one of
the consultants on your page and they said to generate a new certificate on
our SP and indicate an arbitrary serial number for it.  I did that and named
the .crt and .key files something different than the defaults.  Then I
referenced that .crt and .key file in the ApplicationOverride section for
that vhost and it worked.   They did have to specify SHA1 on the adfs
configuration.  I used the original metadata file they sent me too.

I don't know why it worked as I am not a windows person, but I thought I
would update this.
